The design of the DG-808C is completely new and different from those of its predecessors, the DG-400 and DG-600M. The DG-808C's power plant and its wings, with their modern profiles, are the latest state of the art. As always, you will find those details which the experts have come to expect in the DG, such as the comfortable safety cockpit, with its outstanding visibility, the steerable tail wheel, and the high spring mounted landing gear with a large 5.00-5 wheel. The engine: The German made SOLO 2625 engine was developed especially for self launching sailplanes with retractable power plant. Its main features are low weight, compact dimensions, dual ignition, and a long service life. A minimum TBO without any limitation in years of operation is projected to be 400 hours running time. Environmentally friendly: The DG-808C's engine produces the power of 53 hp (39 kW) required for self launching at only 6000 RPM. With the toothed belt reduction of 3:1, the propeller turns at only 2000 RPM. The combination of low propeller and engine speeds produces low noise emission, since the noise increases excessively with RPM. The engine noise is low in frequency, so that it is agreeable and generally will be drowned out by the ambient noise. The high frequency noise from the combustion chambers is cut off by the water cooling system. The engine and exhaust systems are located inside the fuselage, giving room for the installation of a large muffler and allowing the fuselage to act as an additional noise damping device. We have done everything possible for noise reduction. The official noise measurement resulted in extremely low noise level values - far below the limits. The ICAO Chapter VI measurement (horizontal flight 1000 ft.) resulted in value of only 51.8 dBA. This is 16.2 dBA below the limit. Using the ICAO Chapter X standard (climb) a value of 57.1 dBA was measured which is 18.9 dBA below the limit. A compact unit with easy maintenance: The propeller mount is connected rigidly to the motor. For retraction the engine rotates inside the fuselage. All parts which may need service are accessible with the propeller mount extended, e.g., ignition, carburetors, water pump. Removing the power plant from the fuselage, although easy, is only necessary for overhaul of the engine. Automatic power plant control: Instead of a choke, the DG-808C has an automatic fuel injection system for engine starting, similar to the DG-500M. This makes starting the two stroke as easy as a modern car engine. Low weight: We are especially proud of the low weight of the DG-808C. The engine, cooling liquid, propeller, and exhaust system weigh less than 50 kg (110 lbs). Such a low weight is only possible with a two stroke engine. The DG-808C weighs only about 335 kg (738 lbs). The low weight of the 18m wings of 67 kg (148 lbs) each has been achieved through our long experience in designing and processing carbon fiber structures. The wings: The most important detail of all DG-808 models is the new wing with the latest state of the art wing sections designed by the famous L.M. Boermans of Delft Technical University. The wing plan form is designed especially for an 18 meter wingspan. The wing chord at the 18 m tip is noticeably larger than usual in 15m sailplanes with wing extensions. The wing profiles and plan form guarantee optimum performance and gentle stall characteristics. The mini-winglets at the 18m tips together with the wing plan form provide very low induced drag and result in outstanding climb capability in thermals, especially at high wing loading. The wings are produced in moulds made from carbon fiber composites. To create the moulds, computer milled master models were used. This guarantees the highest accuracy for the wing profiles. Performance: The good handling at low speeds makes it possible to squeeze every ounce of lift out of a thermal. Every turn in uneven lift results in some gain of extra altitude. The outstanding and uncomplicated handling characteristics make it easy for a pilot to get the maximum performance out of the ship after only a short training period. Safety: DG sailplanes provide a high level of pilot safety. We are continuously involved in safety related research programs. The latest findings from these programs are adopted as soon as possible into series production. Other features:
The DG-808C safety cockpit:
Comfort and independence: Thanks to its steerable tail wheel and the wing tip wheels the DG-808C is fully maneuverable on the ground without the need for a helper. Superior gliding performance, fast roll rates, excellent visibility and comfortable seating will make flying the DG-808C a thrilling experience of pure pleasure. Thanks to the SOLO 2625 engine, the DG-808C is the self launcher with shortest take off roll, highest climb rates, and lowest noise emission of any other motorglider on the market. The DG-808C is the right glider not only for competition pilots but also for flying "just for fun". For more details, please click here for the DG-808 pages on the DG-Flugzeugbau website. |
